French developer Sushee and Forever Entertainment have announced the release date for Fear Effect Sedna, a new iteration in the series coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One in March under the Square Enix Collective label, and not to be confused with Fear Effect Reinvented, a remaster of the original game under development at the same studio but coming later this year to the very same platforms.

A new character, Axel, joins the veterans Hana, Rain, Glas, and Deke in a story co-written by the original author. Sunshee promises a "mature and exciting story" told with stylish animated cutscenes, and we can see a few seconds of this in the new trailer, as well as some of the death cutscenes which happen when you fail a mission. Players control multiple characters helped by an isometric point of view, and core gameplay mechanics mix real-time action, tactical play, stealth, and puzzles. Benjamin Anseaume, founder of the company, explains how it works:

"Each character has different special weapons and the game includes a paused tactical mode to control different team members at the same time and give orders to work as a team. It's an approach that taps into the core structure of the original games but, with the technology available to us today, feels very 2018."

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"The game's frustrating and generally clunky execution makes it a hard sell."
