Netflix no longer moving forward with English language Squid Game

Following on from the monster hit Korean drama, David Fincher was set to create an English language version of Squid Game for Netflix. It was rumoured in 2024, with plans to potentially begin production in 2026. Despite this, it was never officially confirmed by Netflix itself, and now likely never will be, as the series is no longer moving forward.

This comes via The Playlist, which states that the setup at the end of the original Squid Game, with Cate Blanchett's cameo, actually has nothing to do with a US version, just as director Dong-hyuk Hwang said. There is the potential for more Squid Game in the future, but instead Netflix apparently envisions several spinoffs set in different regions. France and Norway were used as examples, but these are simply speculative and nothing has yet been confirmed.

David Fincher is still working closely with Netflix. His Once Upon a Time in Hollywood offshoot starring Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth character will hit cinemas this November, with a streaming run on Netflix to follow in December. What comes after that is unknown, but it won't be Squid Game.
