Mothergunship, the upcoming game from Joe Mirabello, is a spiritual successor to his previous game, Tower of Guns. It follows the same idea of being a first person roguelike, but Mothergunship is a "full refinement of everything there." It was only announced recently but at PAX East we had the chance to have a quick chat with Mirabello about how development is coming along.

One of the main inclusions this time around is a co-op mode. "Co-op was probably the number one most requested thing about Tower of Guns," Mirabello explained. "But that was a one person game, I made it on my own and I was kind of experimenting with whether or not this gameplay would work and everybody was like "this is fun, but it needs to be co-op", but I didn't build it with that in mind. Mothergunship was built from the ground up with co-op in mind, so we're paying very close attention to making sure the game is fun and performing, even in co-op."

As the game is so early in development, Mirabello was hesitant to disclose information on the extra features and mechanics in co-op, but he did confirm however that it's "more than just increasing the amount of bullets, it's more than increasing the difficulty. There's a few other tricks we have up our sleeve that we'll be sharing in the future. We're just not quite ready to share it yet."

Mothergunship is looking like a truly over-the-top, frantic shooter with guns that can have multiple barrels and the ability to jump up to 30 or 40 times, and although there's no confirmed release date yet, we can expect it on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Is this inclusion of co-op a welcome one?

REVIEW. Written by Graham Bellars

"It's a solid and chaotic experience, but just be prepared to die a lot before you can save the world."
