Monaco: What's Yours is Mine is one of our favourite games ever, which means we absolutely can't wait to see what Pocketwatch Games are going to come up with next. Originally announced as Armada, the studio has now lifted the lid on their next creation, revealing it as the cleverly named Tooth and Tail.
It's described by creator Andy Schatz as "an Arcade-style Real-Time Strategy Game - which means that it's easy to learn, simple to control, and quick to play (5-12 minute matches). TnT is a game for people who want to focus on strategy, not micro. More real-time chess, less competitive cow-clicker."
They've unveiled the newly renamed game (they originally wanted to call it Lead to Fire, but that didn't sit right) along with the first look at the final art style, which is "inspired by the RTS games that we grew up on - we wanted to take the pixel art from the early 90's and modernize the heck out of it. Pixel, meet shader!"
The post by Pocketwatch also goes on to explain some of the game's features, including randomly generated maps, and mix and match unit selection. Interestingly, the game has been built with controller support as a core feature ("Yup, it plays just as well on kb/m, but we really like using the controller as a design constraint" they explained).
"Tooth and Tail's interface is dead simple; you can play at a competitive level after just a game or two. Complexity in TnT comes from an emphasis on improvisation and reactive play over practiced build orders."
The studio are promising that a more open period of development is ahead now that they've revealed more about the game. It's due out in 2016 (unless it hits early access before then), initially on PC, "but it would really be at home on consoles too."
