Back at Gamescom 2015, Microsoft announced plans to bring DVR functionality to the Xbox One. The idea was that you could record shows off broadcast TV on to the Xbox One's hard drive. But the company has scrapped those ideas.

"After careful consideration, we've decided to put development of DVR for Over-the-Air TV on hold to focus our attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming experiences across Xbox One and Windows 10," says a MS rep according to The Verge.

The feature was supposed to let users schedule recordings from their phone or Windows 10 PC. Microsoft even released digital tuners for the Xbox One, letting it decode TV signals without the need for a set top box.

The DVR plans appeared to be the last vestiges of the television-centric approach that Microsoft originally took in the marketing of the Xbox One. The company has downplayed that angle since then, and have firmly focused on the console as a device for playing games.
