After an offscreen video was released online this week - a video that confirmed the existence of the Gears of War HD remaster - it seems that Microsoft has decided to ban the accounts of testers responsible for the leak.

That news came via Polygon, who were contacted by VMC - the third-party testing service that coordinates the testers - explaining that they have sent an email to all testers who took part in the GoW tests, explaining the reasons why Microsoft decided to ban guilty users from Xbox Live.

Initially, perhaps because of a misunderstanding with VMC, it seemed that Microsoft banned not only the "guilty accounts", but all of them. Later Microsoft sent a statement to Polygon, explaining that the ban is just for Xbox Live, and that the individuals in question will continue to have offline access. As a Microsoft spokesperson said:

"To be clear, if a console is suspended from Xbox Live for a violation of the Terms of Use, it can still be used offline. Microsoft enforcement action does not result in a console becoming unusable. Suspensions for both consoles and accounts are determined by looking at a number of factors. To avoid enforcement action including suspension from the service, users should follow the Xbox Live Terms of Use and Code of Conduct."

Although not yet officially announced, it is now clear that Gears of War HD will be unveiled soon enough, maybe - and this is just a wild stab in the dark - during E3 next month.
