It has almost been a year since Sea of Thieves was launched, receiving some criticism for its lack of content when it first introduced fans to the seven seas. Since then, however, it has been fleshed out a lot, meaning that it now has much more substance than it did when it released on April 20 last year.
Rare isn't done yet either, as to celebrate the one year anniversary they are now preparing the release of the biggest update so far, and they even go as far as calling it "game-changing". Amongst other things, we can look forward to the new mode Arena - which we've previously written about, seeing you and your crew compete with others for treasures and perhaps drink grog with them afterwards at the Glorious Sea Dog pub - alongside a story mode called Shores of Gold. Rare explains the following when it comes to this narrative:
"Shores of Gold introduces a new epic storyline to the world of Sea of Thieves, delving deeper into the lore of our favourite pirate paradise. Follow a series of narrative adventures surrounding existing and all-new characters, taking you to undiscovered places and revealing surprising new gameplay features."
"Fans of the expanded game universe will recognise some of the iconic characters and locations in Shores of Gold, yet this is only the beginning of a series of Tall Tales that will allow players to immerse themselves in the legends of Sea of Thieves."
But why stop there? There are other things coming as well like more detailed damage on the ships, meaning it is now possible to destroy wheels or break masts with cannonballs. You also get a new harpoon to use on seamonsters or to snag unguarded chests away by hitting and reeling them in.
Then there's also the new trading company - The Hunter's Call - which lets you fish (also a new addition), as well as hunt and cook. This is described as follows:
"The Hunter's Call is an all-new type of Trading Company that brings long-awaited fishing and cooking capabilities to the Sea of Thieves! Led by the returning wanderer Merrick, The Hunter's Call offers gold and cosmetic rewards, as well as another path to Pirate Legend in exchange for your best prizes and food."
"Master the art of fishing from shore and from ship, hunt animals and monsters for their meat and cook up delicious (or occasionally poisonous) food."
Actually there's even more like new enemies and other things, but instead of having us writing an unreasonably long essay about all this, take a look at the brand new trailer below. The Anniversary Update will be released for Sea of Thieves on April 30, and it does look like good fun.
Are you ready to terrorise the seas as a mighty pirate again?
