Back in 2009 it was rumoured that now defunct Swedish game company Grin was poised to work on a western Final Fantasy title (something that has since been confirmed). Now, after all these years, the notion that the series might move over to one of Square Enix's western studios is being considered. Lightning Returns' gameplay director Yuji Abe explained the company's thinking to OXM:

"Obviously, Square Enix bought out Eidos a number of years ago, and now we have direct access to American development teams. That's certainly been discussed within the company, the possibility of say, Eidos or maybe someone else to look after or maybe take on the Final Fantasy series."

"And we obviously haven't decided anything concrete, but if we find the right team of developers, the right people who really wanted to do it, and we had the right game, then yes, certainly we'd think about it."

Sqaure Enix has invested heavily in western-based studios via Eidos, and now controls teams like IO Interactive (Hitman: Absolution), Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex: Human Revolution & the new Thief reboot) and Crystal Dynamics (who just reinvented Lara Croft in Tomb Raider). Would any of those studios be suitable for taking over one strand of the Final Fantasy series? In the same interview, Lightning Returns' director Motomu Toriyama added:

"The whole thing about the Final Fantasy series is that for every iteration, for every game we do, we have a very different game. So the development team is also different very time, so that there's different ideas and different concepts driving it."

"So obviously within that framework, having a very different type of team could work. So if we got the right team of people, it could produce something very interesting in the end."

REVIEW. Written by Martin Eiser

"Given that this is the end of a trilogy, we're not just burdened with saving humanity, but also the challenge of trying to keep track of the narrative."
