When we were at Gamescom this year, we got to speak with some of the team at Action Squad Studios about their next title in the works, Iron Danger. In the interview, we got to talking about a bunch of different parts of the game, from publishing all the way to how the combat system works, which is a little unorthodox.

"Iron Danger is a tactical RPG game with time rewind mechanisms" said Sami Timonen, CEO at Action Squad Studios before co-worker and programmer, Lauri Härsilä continued. "What that means is instead of action points, we are using actual units of time for each action and you can place them on your timeline, and you can rewind back and forth. It's sort of like editing a video or composing a combat sequence. The game is not actually an action game but is a puzzle game more, like a Rubik's Cube of combat."

Heikki-Pekka Noronen, lead programmer further clarified the point saying, "The game in that sense is pretty linear, it's a straight combat game, which follows the story very closely. The gameplay time is something like 15+ hours, so not a very long game but we are focussed on giving something fresh and new all the time and not getting you bored at any moment."

When talking about the design style for the game, Timonen said, "It's really heavily inspired from our folklore, we're a Helsinki based company. We wanted to modernise our folklore, which basically Tolkien took some references from for his Lord of the Rings back in the day and now we are stealing it back."

Currently Iron Danger is scheduled to launch on PC with the potential for console editions in the future. As for a release date, Noronen simply said, "sometime in the 21st century".

"The unique time manipulation mechanic, whilst a challenge at the start, proved to be a massive highlight."
