Gamescom has officially started, as Nintendo has held a livestream packed full of news earlier today, and now Microsoft has done the same, revealing more details on the upcoming Gears 5, shining a spotlight on the new Horde mode fans can expect in this iteration.
At the show we found out that each character in Horde has their own unique Ultimate ability, like JD being able to call in an airstrike or Kait's cloaking ability. As with Gears of War 4, you still need to build defences to survive against waves of increasingly difficult enemies, collecting power and leveling up skills as you go.
You can play as traditional characters, but also as Jack, who doesn't need cover and can buff allies or hack enemies. Power Taps have also been added too, encouraging players to move their base to utilise them, all of which is shown off in the trailer below.
What's more is that the Halo: Reach Character Pack was also revealed, bringing Emile-A239 and Kat-B320 into the fight. Each of these has their own Ultimates too (as does Terminator's Sarah Connor), and there are even Noble Team cosmetics like a skin for Jack, a banner, a blood spray, a mark, and a weapon set. This will be available for those who own the Ultimate Edition, and is included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate too.
As if all this wasn't enough, we also heard more about the collaboration with AAPE by A Bathing Ape, featuring Gears-themed items only available at E3. The second phase is on the way this autumn, including clothing and in-game cosmetics, and fans will get the AAPE x Gears MoonFace mark, blood spray, black camo lancer weapon skin, and red camo banner with any purchase of an item in the AAPE Capsule Collection, due to land on August 30. There will also be a Kait character skin as part of the AAPE x Gears 5 pack, also including the black camo weapon set and other cosmetics.
