We caught up with design director Lucas Davis to talk about the online multiplayer game that is BattleCry at the Bethesda pre-E3 event in Santa Monica.
"For us it was important to create something distinct," says Davis. "We were looking out there what games were on the market and how we could do something that had never been seen before."
A lot of the interview covered the basics of the game, the setting, the gameplay and what kind of game modes we can expect in addition to the vanilla team deathmatch we tried. Davis hinted at a unique signature mode in development for the game and at three team asymmetric multiplayer.
"With the entire game the design has helped inspire the art, the art has helped inspire the game, so you know we're a close knit team that works really well together so at any time we develop our modes as we playtest, which we do every day at the studio, you know we get feedback from the team [on] the kind of things they want to see. We constantly have a lot of cool ideas, and since everybody really bought into the universe at the studio a lot of those ideas do kind of fit into the world that we're creating and the technology we're creating."
There are 5 classes of warriors announced to date (Archer, Brawler, Duelist, Enforcer, and Gadgeteer), but BattleCry Studios have plans to add more warriors over the lifespan of the game. The warrior classes will also play differently in the different factions.
"We kind of look at the personalities of the factions," says Davis. "How we want them to stand out. So for our Royal Marines we're looking for sort the majesty and discipline of the British Empire. For the Cossack we really hone in to their courage and ferocity. And we try to make those different emotions play out in our warriors and how we build them. How we arm them. And just kind of their animations sets - how they attack and move in the game."
BattleCry is set for beta (and release) in 2015 and you can read our preview for some hands-on impressions.
