We were originally meant to get the acclaimed indie Metroidvania Hollow Knight in a physical version, but Team Cherry and publisher Skybound Games have ended their partnership, which means that this outstanding game will no longer end up on the shelves with physical editions for PS4, Switch, and Xbox One as intended.

It's been an amicable settlement, or at least that's what both sides try to show with their respective announcements. Sybound was first, taking to Twitter to wish "continued success" to their former partners and saying they're looking forward to seeing their new project.

Team Cherry then explained on their blog the reasons behind the decision, which basically have to do with the resources available to a team that small while they're still trying to improve the base game:

"As a team of 3 people still in intensive production of Hollow Knight, taking the game into the retail space (even with the extensive assistance of Skybound) proved more work than we could reasonably manage."

"In future we will investigate other ways to deliver physical versions of Hollow Knight, though likely that will be in smaller quantities."

Would you have bought a physical edition?

      REVIEW. Written by Sam Bishop

"It provides the timeless fun and exploration of a Metroidvania, while at the same time giving it a lick of paint to bring the genre into the modern day."
