A few hours ago during the live broadcast of Square Enix, the studio and Hajime Tabata himself revealed that the director resigned from his role at Luminous Productions and Square Enix as of October 31. It was also announced that three of the planned DLC episodes for Final Fantasy XV will not be released.
Tabata was keen to thanks fans for the everything, and while he made his decision to leave the company to pursue another project and start his own company. Presumably, his decision was made as a result of Square Enix deciding to wind down development on FFXV.
"From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans. I would like to thank everyone who continues to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally."
There were four episodes planned as expansions of Final Fantasy XV but now that Aranea, Lunafreye, and Noctis have been cancelled we're left with Episode Ardyn. It takes place 30 years prior to the events of the main game and will see release in March next year. Meanwhile, a standalone version of the multiplayer expansion Comrades will be released on December 13. Those who own the expansion will get the standalone version for free and it will feature 10 new bosses and lots of new gear.
It seems Square Enix has decided to move on from Final Fantasy XV and Luminous Productions will now focus their efforts on making a new AAA title.
