GRTV: Tripwire on Rising Storm

We play, talk and experience the game that evolved from a mod of Red Orchestra 2 via an expansion to a full on standalone product.

We spent some time at the Tripwire Interactive booth at GDC with president John Gibson and the external producer on Rising Storm Tony Gillham. First we were given an in-depth presentation and some hands-on with the game - detailing some of the maps and the specific features that you'll enjoy when you're playing as a Japanese. Then we were also given some hands-on with the game and a sample of the Flamethrower on the Iwo Jima map.

After this in-depth look at the game we stepped outside the booth for a chat with both Gibson and Gillham to learn more about the game that's targeted for release later this year.

"It went from a mod that we might do something with, to a game that was maybe going to be an expansion, to now it's own full standalone game," said John Gibson.

"We've certainly come a very long way. And we've seen all kinds of exciting changes happen in the format of Rising Storm. And we're quite confident that we've got something here that is really going to please first person shooter fans," added Tony Gillham.

"What we really want to do, we don't want to lose that hardcore edge," Gibson explains. "We love making tactical shooters, but we also want to do things to make it easier to bridge the gap between the more casual shooters and the shooters that we're making. We can do a better job at that."

Gibson also went on to elaborate on his controversial statement that Call of Duty had ruined a generation of gamers.

"Because of the learning curve, because of the skill gap actually in multiplayer shooters has been so compressed by the Call of Duty franchsie - it's kind of robbing a generation of gamers of the deeper experiences that we maybe had ten years ago."
