"The king of the car simulators" may sound like an exaggeration, but quite honestly, there aren't many series that have been able to challenge Forza in recent years, and this seventh entry not only seems to cement its mastery of the genre, it also develops it. When we got the chance to wrap our claws around an Xbox controller in the Galen Center, Los Angeles, it's not only special because we get to play a new Forza, we can actually play it on the high-end console.
We could choose from three different courses and game modes, all carefully selected to showcase different aspects of the game. In one we got thrown around on wet asphalt in a Nissan GTR, in another we were able to drive a hot new Porsche, and finally, we got to take control of some huge trucks at high speeds. The fact that Porche even showed the 911 GT2 RS 2018 left a powerful impression, and that it was included in the version we played was amazingly exciting.
The actual racing is in great shape and builds on the foundations laid down with Forza 6, and that is obviously a good thing. The torque and the power of the wheels in the Nissan GTR vibrates through to your fingertips. And then, when it starts to rain, everything changes. You have to remember that the braking distances are significantly longer and you can't go into tight turns at the same speeds as you could before. On the other hand, the truck racing didn't impress much at all. It felt like there was an overall lack of weight and physics didn't feel right, it didn't exactly match the size and heft of the trucks. Bear in mind that it was just a one track demo, and we're still curious to play more.
The Forza series has always been known for offering us the ability to customise cars and mess around with virtually every aspect of your ride. Of course, this is still in Forza 7, but now it's also possible to make some choices with regards to your driver. You can, for example, choose different types of race suits to wear, from very professional gear to classical suits from the 60s and 70s. This isn't a game changer, neither does it do anything to alter the feeling of sitting behind the wheel, but it does make the experience a touch more personal.
Forza 7 will launch with over 700 cars, almost twice as many as in Forza 6, and there'll be 30 different tracks to compete on. Forza 6 introduced different weather types, but now this has been taken a bit further with a completely dynamic weather system. Heavy rain can come as a surprise at any time during a race, and it's then that you have to adapt to the conditions as it affects the surface so much and can make every aspect of driving more of a challenge.
Forza 7 looks beautiful. The silky smooth framerate, along with the 4K resolution, offers incredible detail on both the cars and the tracks. When the sun lights up the asphalt for the first time after a rainy storm, it looks absolutely amazing. The power of the Xbox One X really shines in all areas, from the dynamic weather to the detailed car models, and the locked 60 frames per second gameplay is as brilliant as always. Turn 10 also seems to have gotten the sound design really spot on this time. The roaring engines, the sounds from the gearbox and the tyre squeaks, all are in perfect harmony with the great visuals.
Forza 7 will definitely showcase what Xbox One X can do, there is no doubting that. High-resolution 4K graphics, a great framerate, loads of cars and tracks, it should all combine to create pure driving pleasure. It shows that Turn 10 has worked hard to update the game, while retaining the stable foundations upon which they have built over the years. As far as we're concerned, there's really no other racer that can compare right now. Forza 7 is releasing on October 3 for Windows 10 PC and Xbox One, with an improved version for Xbox One X available as soon as the console is released in November.
