A former employee of Half-Life and Portal developer Valve is suing the company for $3.1 million in damages. The reasons for the legal challenge is an accusation of transgender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination of employment.

According to the legal documentation (which you can see in full over on Polygon), the employee worked at Valve's Washington office translating content into Spanish, and filed for the right to work from home since she wanted to move to Los Angeles and undergo gender reassignment.

Valve approved it all but wanted her to move from full-time employee to being an independent contractor. She then worked under this arrangement for a time, but at a later point she complained of younger translators being lured to work for free by her supervisor's "false promises", at which point she says her contract was swiftly terminated.

Following the termination of her contract, Valve apparently told their former employee that the position had been relocated back to Washington. Although she was prepared to relocate, Valve declined the offer.

The plaintiff also, and perhaps more damningly, made accusations against her former supervisor, alleging that he referred to her as "it" and created a hostile working environment.

Valve has denied any wrongdoing in its official response.
