We recently went hands-on with Far Cry Primal and came away looking forward to seeing the finished article. Part way through our time with the game we had a chance to down our stone age tools and grab a word with game director Thomas Simon, who had plenty to tell us about what players can expect from the prehistoric adventure. In particular we wanted to know about the ancient arsenal players will take into battle. This is what he had to tell us:

"We created multiple variants of the bow. We have the classical hunter bow, we have a slower but very powerful long-range sniper bow, a rapid fire short bow if you really need to spray arrows at people, and we even have a bow that shoots two arrows at once if you want to do a super skill shot or a lot of damage at short range. It's one of the most important weapons but we explored melee weapons a lot, one-handed, two-handed club, the spear which can also be thrown for maximum damage, the club also can be thrown."

"All weapons can be set on fire, so the fire is part of the weaponry that you can explore, either to protect yourself or to do more lethal damage. So it was really more exploring all the possibilities and at the end we came up with a pretty big arsenal of weapons, what I've talked about, but also poison bombs, fire bombs. We can drop traps on the ground. We have a sling that can do a silent headshot. And of course the beast mastery; the player will be able to tame systemic predators in the world... a collection of seventeen animals, each with different stats and abilities, some are good for stealth, some are good for assault etc. So it's really going to be opening new tactical choices and opportunities for the player."

Far Cry Primal is heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 23, and will land on PC in March.

"If you still think you have more Far Cry in you, and if you appreciate the survival theme of the Stone Age, Primal is a safe bet."
