PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was one of the smash hits of 2017, and now in a new roadmap posted on the game's official website we've got some idea of what lies ahead for the future, including for the esports scene, which has up till now only had a select few tournaments like those at the Intel Extreme Masters events in Oakland and Katowice, not to mention Gamescom and TwitchCon.

"Seriously, we are not there yet, but we will be," the post starts by saying. "Thanks to the amazing feedback coming from the player community and professional scene we believe we're moving in the right direction. We truly want to build a great foundation for Battle Royale esports, and while we have seen some great events already using our game, we have much work to do, especially with the observing side of things."

The post adds that a crucial part of this future in esports is the 3D replay system, which would then allow the big organisations like OpTic Gaming, Cloud9, and FaZe Clan to provide better coverage of matches. "This year we want to further improve the live spectator tool, but also integrate a replay system for spectators to use during live matches. Our data analytics team has been pouring over ranking and player performance data for the past 3 months, and they are now working on improving MMR and the overall ranking system," the roadmap adds.

All of this sounds very positive, and it's great that the development team aren't just resting on their laurels and sticking with the system as it stands. In fact, the team "think[s] 2018 will be a great year for us to further strengthen our esport foundation."
