Bluehole and ESL have announced that they're partnering to bring a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds tournament to Gamescom, suitably called the Gamescom PUBGInvintational, taking place from August 23 to 26 and featuring a total prize pool of $350,000 USD.

The tournament will see 80 of the best players and influencers competing at the game's debut LAN event, including Solo, Duo, Duo FPP (First Person Perspective), and Squad modes, and the best overall score from three games will determine who comes out as the champion.

As we've already reported, Gamescom Invitational crates are coming to the game alongside this announcement, costing $2.50 to open, with the money going towards the event and the prize money, as well as charity. What's in the crates though? Themed clothing, of course.

Coverage of the tournament will of course be provided, with certain Gamescom attendees being able to enter the tournament and meet dev team members, and you can head over to the game's official Twitch channel, where coverage of the event starts from 15:00 BST each day.

"From very early on we knew that the success of PUBG was reliant on the passion of its community. We want to celebrate this by inviting eighty of the top players from around the world to compete in the first offline invitational," said Chang Han Kim, VP and Executive Producer at Bluehole Inc. "It's been incredibly rewarding to see how quickly our community has grown, and can't wait to hear about everyone's experience this summer."

"We're thrilled to see PUBG enhancing its already amazing in-game experience with a competitive LAN component at gamescom" said Ralf Reichert, CEO at ESL. "The game's been a smash hit and its natural evolution into a competitive title has been incredibly exciting to watch. We're looking forward to working with Bluehole on this, and many more events to come."

With H1Z1 also having a growing esports scene with the Elite Series, can PUBG compete?
