Crowdfunding nearly doubles LoL Worlds' prize pool

And it probably won't stop there, either.

The League of Legends World Championships are in full swing, and with the group stages finally over and the tournament heading into the quarter finals this weekend, Riot Games have given us an update on the final prize pool.

For those of you who don't know, this year the World Championships have taken a cue from Valve, who used crowdfunding in order to increase the final prize pool for the DOTA 2 International. For everyone who buys the Championship Zed skin or ward icon for use in the game, 25% of the purchase contributes to the final pool. Overall, these purchases have added over $2 million US dollars, making the current total winnings sit at $4,145,000. The winner of the tournament will take home 40% of this, so that means right now they'd take home a whopping $1,600,000.

The crowdfunding isn't going to end there either, as up until October 29, the prize pool will continue to grow thanks to fan contribution. It wouldn't be a surprise if the end result was almost $10 million US dollars. If you're a League of Legends player and wish to support your team, 30% of the purchase of your respective team's icon are shared directly with them, meaning you can do your part to ensure every team gets something out of the championships.

You can read the full article on the LoL Esports website here. It seems that these crowdfunding efforts are really helping the industry grow much faster - what do you think? Let us know below.
