Electronic Arts recently held a meeting in which they spoke to investors, and during this they expressed their surprise at the growth of full game downloads on consoles, as they now make up 33% of all unit sales. They also predicted a growth to 38% by the end of this year as well.
By the end of 2016 the install base for PS4 and Xbox One was 79 million units, and EA expects that to reach 105 million units by the end of 2017 as well, although this estimate doesn't take the Nintendo Switch into account.
It's also interesting to note that, according to EA, traditional DLC sales have become less important as games move more towards live services. This new trend has already been seen in Titanfall 2, where all DLC is free.
Can digital sales ever overtake physical sales?
