CCP Games has announced their intention to shut down their free-to-play shooter, Dust 514. The sci-fi offering, which is set in the same universe as the studio's enduring space-based MMO, Eve Online, will go offline on May 30. As a result the planned 1.3 update has been canned, and microtransactions have been taken offline.
The shooter had a unique and interesting link to its MMO counterpart, and fans lamenting its closure will be pleased to hear that the developers are working on a replacement that should scratch the same FPS itch, with more details expected at EVE Fanfest on April 21.
CCP plans to use their experience with Dust 514 to "build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from DUST 514. This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game."
