Dragon Age has always been about the good stories, and how our choices as a player shape and change these stories. In Dragon Age Origins there were six different ways to start the game, and it had four different endings, with variations in-between regarding quests and companions.
Dragon Age: Inquisition has really upped the ante. Yes, it will only have one prologue telling the same story for whatever character you choose to play, but after that the story is truly yours to shape.
You can choose to just walk around exploring, or only do main quests, or just hunt dragons, or pick flowers and other ingredients and just sit in your camp crafting potions and poisons till your inventory is full, or, you can do all of it! You can choose to plan your battles or you can run headlong into them like Rambo on speed.
If you're more of the tactical type, every battle can be planned down to the smallest detail, as tactical camera mode is available on all platforms. Use your surroundings to your advantage; destroy key structures or change the terrain with magic spells. You can target specific body parts on some of the larger creatures you encounter, like a dragon's wings or an ogre's feet so they can't escape your wrath.
You can choose to play only your character or you can control the whole party. So far nine possible companions have been confirmed, of which six are named (Cassandra, Varric, Solas, Iron Bull, Vivienne and Sera). Companion armour customisation is also back, and this time around there are no class restrictions on armour. So if you want a mage in full plate armour, then by Odin's magnificent beard you'll have a mage in full plate armour! Bioware's motto is: Play it your way.
With Inquisition you can play it your way until you're old and grey, because the game has 40 possible endings. That's right, 40! Or, there are 40 major endings, with slight variations depending upon all your different choices, so technically there are more. We'd like to hereby wish all achievement whores good luck!
What many players disliked about Dragon Age 2 was that you could only play as human, unlike in Origins where you had two other races at your disposal. In Inquisition races are back, with one important addition; this time around it's possible to play as a Qunari. This does not mean, however, that you can dual-wield great swords as a Qunari rogue. We asked. It will also be possible to recruit a Qunari to your party, but it won't be Sten making a comeback.
In Inquisition you'll encounter several types of dragons and some of the battles will be very challenging indeed. Dragons will breathe fire at you from the air, use their wings to blow you away, so to speak, kick, bite, crush and sweep you off your feet with their tails, all the while stomping around the battle field like an over-sized, winged warlord. The best part? They won't respawn.
The different areas you get to explore in the world of Inquisition are huge. On average they are three times the size of the Kocari Wilds in Origins. Everything will be dynamic, even the weather, which will be used to enhance the mood in certain areas. One area will never be experienced the same way twice. Bioware has also put a lot of work into creating realistic environments, so when you're out exploring take some time to look at the puddles, they'll knock your socks off! Did we mention exploration will be a lot easier now that you can jump?
All told there's plenty of changes coming to Dragon Age: Inquisition, and time will tell if they're for the better. We're optimistic, and can't wait to see more of what Bioware are cooking. Now, all we've got to do is wait until October 7 (October 10 in Europe), when Inquisition will launch on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
