We caught up with the CEO of Hidden Path Entertainment to talk about the upcoming tower defence game Defense Grid 2, the genre in general and user generated content.

"As we get a larger and larger audience we've been able to see things that people want in the game that we weren't able to provide the first time," said Pobst of the reasons for going back and doing a sequel. "We're able to do user created content. Let people create their own levels and share them with eachother. We're even going to let players sell levels to other players as well. And we're bringing multiplayer to the game as well. We'll have co-operative and competitive multiplayer modes."

When asked about what he thinks makes the genre as popular and broad as it is Pobst offered:

"I think people like building things and I think they like creating and optimising, but they also like protecting. Being able to defend, it's a good side. A lot of what tower defence [comes from] is mods on strategy games, like early Starcraft or Warcraft III, and I think what we've seen is people like just taking one side of it. I want to build my base. I want to protect my base."

Defense Grid 2 is in development for PC, Mac and Linux and will see release during the first half of 2014.

REVIEW. Written by Bengt Lemne

"It's a burger with all the trimmings, if you will. You know what to expect, but it's well put together and served with tasty sides."
