Daybreak Games has announced a new game in the Planetside franchise, Planetside Arena, a bridge between Planetside 2 and what's next in the shape of a session-based shooter that will launch with battle royale (solo and teams) and Massive Clash (250v250) modes on January 29 for PC (there are console plans, but that will happen later). The plan is to add more modes each season, staples like Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch, and Conquest are mentioned.

"PlanetSide is a ground-breaking series that introduced the gaming world to truly epic FPS battles," said Ji Ham, CEO of Daybreak Games, via press release. "We are very excited to introduce PlanetSide Arena as the next step in the growth of the franchise, as we continue to invest and build towards our vision for the future of the entire PlanetSide universe."

"This takes place after Planetside 2, the war has kind of ended," explains lead game designer Tony Morton. "The map itself is 8k by 8k Amerish map, we're calling it The Echoes of Amerish. So we've given it a complete rework from top to bottom and left and right in terms of its road structure, its terrain, it has biomes now. So it's kind of been completely redone. The idea is that the factions have fallen apart, the war has ended, everybody is just trying to figure out what's going on, on their own. And we're going to be using the seasonal content drops as themed packages to deliver story arcs over the months as we progress to whatever may be next..."

Planetside 2 players need not fear that this would spell the end of the longrunning MMOFPS, instead, next year will see the introduction of a new continent (Oshur) in Planetside 2 for the first time in five years.

Planetside Arena will offer a mix of a premium model and a seasonal Battle Pass. Here are the versions that are available for pre-order via Steam now: "The Sanctuary Assault Edition (SRP $19.99) includes the Season 1 Battle Pass and the Assault Armor set. The Legendary Edition (SRP $39.99) is packed with Season 1 Battle Pass, three Class Armor sets (Engineer, Assault and Medic), and the M-20 Tempest (hoverbike) Pack.  Each pre-order grants players Closed Beta access."
