Coco Gauff criticises animosity towards trans community after WTA's mandatory gender tests
Coco Gauff understands the need to ensure fairness in tennis, but sees many use this test to attack the trans community.
American tennis player Coco Gauff, current World No. 4 in the WTA, has voiced her concerns about the mandatory gender testing for female tennis players introduced by the Women's Tennis Association, designed "to promote equal athletic opportunities in women's professional tennis and maintain fair competition for all players", as the WTA said in a statement.
There have been all kinds of responses to that policy announced last month, and Gauff sits in the middle: while she acknowledged it is important to preserve fairness in the sport, she laments that it has created a lot of animosity towards the trans community.
"I think it's a conversation that is very nuanced. I guess I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women's sports. But I also do not like the attack that it is creating. People who don't really care, but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community. So I'm not really a big fan of that either.
"As far as where I stand, I definitely support the trans community, but I also support the need of creating fairness in sport too".
