Yes, you have to watch McMahon on Netflix 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 8th of October 2024 at 22:38

Petter reviewed the Netflix documentary McMahon last week and gave a very high rating. As perhaps the editorial staff's biggest wrestling enthusiast (together with Johan Vahlström), I felt that I also wanted to have my say now that I had grazed it.

And... I can only agree with Petter in his rating. Vince McMahon is a fascinating person and character, who manages to be equal parts father figure, businessman and monster. Actually, not much new emerges because Vince has a very liberal attitude to what is true and what is not, but we still get to take part in his view on everything, supplemented with a lot of fun from the video archive.

As a wrestling fan, it's pure joy to see interviews with old legends who are still alive, horrified by how many actually died, fascinated by how loyal names like Hulk Hogan, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena are to Vince, be reminded of classic feuds, marvel at how much has happened that would be completely impossible today and so on.

In the end, the documentary ends a little too abruptly as Vince left everything in a hurry due to the recent accusations against him and there is still a lot to suggest that he is now gone for good - but if you don't like wrestling, this is still a superb review of the phenomenon of wrestling and WWE in particular, and if you like wrestling, you just can't miss this.

Yes, you have to watch McMahon on Netflix

An incredible personality for better or worse - mostly bad.

Metaphor: ReFantazio feels extremely promising 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 8th of October 2024 at 01:54

Due to the fact that I have had other things to do in the game, I have not had the opportunity to get started with Metaphor: ReFantazio before - until today. Because after reading what our international colleagues think (check out our review) - and all the world's media as it seems - I was in a hurry.

Few do Japanese role-playing games better than Atlus and now everyone who has not yet hooked on the Persona series in particular gets the chance to get into something completely new. Since I've played less than 2% of what the game has to offer so far, I'm not going to give any overall reviews, but I do note that it's extremely well-designed and phenomenally well-sounding - and in addition, the cast of characters is growing on me quickly.

After a year that beats everything I've ever experienced before when it comes to Japanese RPGs (seriously, we'll be talking about and referencing 2024 for ten years to come), I'm hopeful that this will be the icing on the cake. I'll get back to you when I have more on my feet for a proper assessment.

Metaphor: ReFantazio feels extremely promising

Metaphor : ReFantazio will be released on Friday for PC, Playstation and Xbox - and those who like Japanese role-playing games just can't miss it.

Awesome Halo news 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 7th of October 2024 at 03:10

I've been writing on Gamereactor for about two decades and if you've ever read my texts, you know of course that there are few game series I like as much as Halo , and have of course played everything, Consumed a lot of the entertainment around (mainly books) and owns a little too much stuff and clothes.

But... That Halo hasn't really been the same since Bungie left Master Chief is perhaps no secret. I had high hopes that 343 Industries would do something good with the series, but even though the quality has been very high, it has also squeaked. Important features have often been missing, support has been mixed, and several elements have been downright stupid.

Now, however, it will be something of a fresh start. Studio head Bonnie Ross left the other year and it is relatively new names who are now in charge of the studio – who now apparently think it is time for something completely new. Therefore, 343 Studios has renamed itself Halo Studios, and is throwing out the old graphics technology Slipspace, and instead investing in Unreal Engine 5. And it's no small step, Slipspace has leftovers in it from the days of Bungie.

The idea is that the studio will thus be able to invest more in making the games, and less in maintaining its own graphics engine. This makes it easier to find good people and they can better collaborate with, for example, The Coalition ( Gears of War studio) which works exclusively with the Unreal Engine.

Halo Studios claims to already have several games in the works, of which I suspect (based on released images from Halo Studios' test coding in Project Foundry) that one of them is a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. There have been many rumors about this, and I have a hard time imagining a better premiere game for Xbox Next than just that. Considering that both Halo and Xbox will be 25 years old in November 2026 and that there are rumors that the next Xbox (which is supposed to be insanely powerful) will be released in 2026 – I believe there is some connection.

We'll have to wait and see, but a real reboot of this kind feels entirely appropriate, and anyone who worried that Microsoft would cut back on Halo can breathe a sigh of relief, because if anything, it seems like they want to invest more than ever sooner.

Awesome Halo news

Another Halo project I'm convinced is on the way, is some kind of battle royale. Considering that Fortnite is just battle royale and Unreal Engine, there is undeniably good technology in place for this.

James Gunn, don't forget the DC games and Batman 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 3rd of October 2024 at 02:05

There's a lot going on on the DC front right now with the new universe that will be launched with an animated soft start this year, and in earnest in 2025 with the launch of Superman.

Fun for me as a DC fan, and there is so much I look forward to such as the aforementioned Superman, but also movies like The Brave and the Bold and Swamp Thing as well as TV series like Peacemaker, Booster Gold and Lanterns - plus odd projects like the investment in a movie about Bane and Deathstroke.

But... In the gaming world, it doesn't look as fun. The last few big DC games have been really disappointing and apart from Wonder Woman, we don't really know anything else that is on the way, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to give my opinion on five dream games I really hope will become reality and that would add something to the new The DC Universe.

• Injustice 3 / Fighting This one doesn't really need any further introduction, but we simply need a new Injustice, just that this time all fighters will be based on the new DC universe with the right actors and appearances. A perfect way to introduce many characters to a wide audience.

• Peacemaker / Third-person shooter The idea was that Peacemaker would take a while and first the TV series Waller would be filmed. But... the fans nagged and in the end Peacemaker had to be fast-tracked and next year it's premiere time. This would be an excellent Gears of War/Space Marine-like shooter that could be advantageously combined with co-op by adding Vigilante, among other things.

• Batman: Gotham City / Open World Rocksteady may have lost his soul and the Warner bosses are incompetent. But it's time to bring Batman back to life. The new DC universe will have its own Batman (alongside The Batman), and this should have its own series of games that are largely based on the Arkham titles.

• The Authority / Role-playing Here we have a stack of heroes that for many are quite unknown on the same premises as Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad once were, but with a clearer goal. Gunn's upcoming movie will hopefully be very entertaining, and it would be great if Eidos Montreal (Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy) could develop a game where we get to follow the group and get to know the members.

• Harley Quinn / Beat 'em up This isn't really weird, not everything has to be AAA and the idea of a fairly straightforward beat 'em up where Harley Quinn (and others – because of course there should be co-op) could fight their way through an adventure. Preferably in the same style as Turtles: Shredder's Revenge complete with co-op.

James Gunn, don't forget the DC games and Batman

It's high time for Batman to have his own adventure again.

Absolutely lovely Swedish retro game reading in a new book 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 2nd of October 2024 at 02:38

We have actually had a pretty good time with interesting books in Swedish about the gaming world, where I would especially like to highlight Martin Lindell's two 8 pieces in the 80s: Nintendo's march into the Swedish homes and The story of Sega: How a blue hedgehog and hockey game took Sweden by storm - and Ludde Nordenskjöld's Insert Coin – The rise and fall of arcade games in Sweden.

Now the latter has released a new book called Never Game Over, which we previously wrote about here at Gamereactor. Over the past few days, I've been ploughing through the 155 pages and really enjoyed a nostalgic journey of what it was like to be a gamer when pixels dominated and the internet didn't exist. The focus is on the late 80s and early 90s, and there was more than I thought that I had forgotten, or at least not reflected on.

This has made me sit with a smile on my face and kind of enjoyed my way through the pages that are full of recognition. The book is available at Spel & Sånt (no collaboration) and several other retailers, and I can warmly recommend.

Ludde has also been kind enough to give me an extra copy (signed!) to hand out to the one of you who can offer the funniest game-related memory. Let us hear what you have to say.

You want to read this one, I promise.
