You haven't forgotten Trolltyg i Santaskogen, have you? 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 19th of December 2024 at 02:00

Those who are a little older (like yours truly and Petter) probably remember that Trolltyg i Tomteskogen was broadcast regularly on SVT around Christmas time. An American film of just under an hour about gnomes of the slightly more historical kind, that is, small goblin-like creatures who live in the forest and help in all sorts of ways.

Since I've probably seen it 10-15 times (if not more), I know it by and about inside and out and remember many classic lines ("Where's Fjant?"). But... For unclear reasons, it has not been broadcast for a long time and a quick Googling reveals that there seems to be some kind of rights problem behind it. I've certainly been eager to see the movie again, but since it's nowhere legally available, I haven't bothered.

However, a friendly Gamereactor reader (can't remember the name – but thanks!) suggested that it is available in its entirety on Youtube. So said and done, the other day me and my partner looked through it again – and as it stands.

In short, if you want some old-fashioned Christmas coziness to enjoy in the days before the big day, then take a look at Trolltyg i Santaskogen below.

What is your relationship to this sweet gem?

Of course you should have crackers for Christmas gaming 🇸🇪

Of course, there are few things that are easier to put together than classic crackers, a Christmas candy I personally can't imagine being without. But... Of course, it is always possible to improve the taste experience further, and I think I have just the right tips for this after decades of boiling.

It's not something revolutionary and if you look around you'll find several sites that include these ingredients, but rarely in the same recipe and in these proportions. So... Here are my best crackers, the Christmas candy that must be in place.

The basic recipe when making crackers is simple, it should be:

• 2 dl cream

• 2 dl sugar

• 2 dl light syrup

However, most recipes you see will recommend you use a saucepan. Don't do that, but go for a frying pan, preferably nonstick or stainless.

Once you've stirred in the three ingredients above, you'll also be able to add in:

• 50 grams of butter

• 0.5 tsp baking powder

The former adds a pleasant caramel-like roundabout and also makes the crackers come off more easily from the molds. The latter, on the other hand, makes them more porous and therefore not as compact, a much nicer texture.

Cook the crackers at a low to medium temperature until they pass a so-called ball test, i.e. are so compact that you can form balls out of them that stick together if you drop the batter a little into cold water. Often it takes just under an hour. When you pass the bullet test, you add:

• 50 grams of chopped almonds

• 4 tbsp breadcrumbs

Stir gently and immediately fill around 75-80 crisper tins, which you can place on a lightly oiled baking sheet (then they will not tip over). It can be a bit fiddly if you don't have a cracker, but a small sauce tip usually does the trick.

Cool outside for a little while, put in a jar and enjoy as often as you can. After all, it's Christmas.

Of course you should have crackers for Christmas gaming

What's your favorite Christmas candy (the first to say ice chocolate loses)?

Hoping for a solid Mario Kart 8 challenger from Sega next year 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 17th of December 2024 at 02:20

Considering how incredibly popular the Deluxe version of Mario Kart 8 has been, it's actually quite strange that there haven't been more copies of the concept. Sure, there have been map games, but they have still been relatively few and small. Previously, before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe broke every conceivable record, it was much more common.

One that is on the way was announced during The Game Awards – Sonic Racing: Crossworlds – but Sega's trailer was so uneventful and superficial that it was kind of neglected. But despite this, I am positive. These games have actually been consistently pretty good, and I hope they now really steer clear of the concept. The world is really crying out for kart racing (the sales figures speak for themselves) and for PC, Playstation and Xbox there is far too little of this.

However, Sega always wants to innovate a little too much and therefore overcomplicates the concept, which doesn't really require more than strong mascots with intuitive racing and a good mechanic for pick-up so no one detracts too much. Sega is the only company to have the renowned roster of drivers required, complete with wonderful game worlds to compete in, and they also have the racing expertise.

I sincerely hope that they can resist the temptation to add far too many different elements, which risks making the experience sloppy and a little unfocused. Sega seems fully set on once again becoming a Japanese powerhouse with  strong in-house games in popular series, and a phenomenal kart game would definitely help with this, and I really hope they take the chance.

Make sure to do this really well now Sega. Properly managed, you can sell millions of games. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is at around 65 million units sold, so the interest in good mascot racing is huge...

Is Sony going to start releasing games for Xbox? 🇸🇪

Written by Jonas on the 16th of December 2024 at 02:47

This past weekend's most exciting news for me is the report that Sony may release Lego Horizon Adventures for Xbox, and this pretty soon. I want to state right away that I'm not at all sure that this will happen, on the contrary, rather, mainly because I really don't see any real point in it - but stranger things have still happened.

I guess there are a few people reading who are already in the process of writing "game so who cares?! " and at the same time misses what this would actually mean. If that happens, Sony has seriously opened up the possibility of increasing its revenue by launching games to competing formats.

Should such an attempt be successful, there is no reason to believe that it would be the last game to go that way, and we would probably have a situation where games - probably mainly live service - from Sony could be completely multi-format. And you can also imagine that they are sniffing at releasing older titles for the console. Why not sell a few million copies extra of Spider-Man 2 for example, it's hardly a game that lifts Playstation 5 sales right now?

But... As I wrote, I'm not at all convinced of this, even though the very well-regarded Insider Gaming, among others, also addresses the matter. If they're going to release games for Xbox - why choose a title that flopped to all formats (PC, Playstation and Switch)? It's almost guaranteed to sell crap to Xbox as well, and then they've angered parts of their community (because it's going to happen, believe me) for really nothing more than setting an example. As little as Aloy's Lego adventures have sold, I can even imagine that the Xbox version will be at a loss - except if Microsoft paid for Game Pass.

If Sony is really keen to try to reach more buyers, then I think a game like Helldivers II would be very much in the works. It would sell a few million and it would be good for the Playstation players who get more people to play with to console. But to make people angry and get gamers begging and begging for all the exclusive titles for Switch and Xbox while people start to wonder if they really need a Playstation if they still get the games for their old console for a flopped Lego game... It feels hard to digest.

What would speak for Lego Horizon Adventures is if it's something that would have been agreed since before we knew it was a flop - with Game Pass (Sony may not want to release it at the same time for Xbox as many will then play "for free" instead of buying). The other is that Sony is working on a live service Horizon. Their live service efforts have not exactly praised the market, and one can imagine that they want to get more players. Then it might be worth teaching Xbox players a little about Horizon before the premiere.

Is Sony going to start releasing games for Xbox?

What do you think, is Lego Horizon Adventures coming to Xbox soon?

Very happy with The Game Awards 🇸🇪

After a night's work, I'm a bit tired and I'm going to keep it short, which might be a shame considering that probably the best The Game Awards ever just crossed the finish line. It has absolutely spouted out nice announcements and shown powerful trailers of games we already knew.

What was best is debatable, but for me, Okami 2, the new Onimusa, The Witcher 4, Project Century and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet probably take the prize, although I'm also immensely happy about Sonic Racing Crossworlds and Swedish Hazelight's Split Fiction. I love good multiplayer and these two titles are probably the ones I spend the most time on.

The appearance of Muppet legends Statler and Waldorf also felt a lot more fun than I had expected, thanks in large part to good self-criticism from Keighley and roasting hot topics in the gaming world. I also want to say that it was incredibly nice to see Harrison Ford again, even if it made it very clear why he didn't play Indy himself in The Great Circle. Unfortunately, the legend has aged.

Incidentally, I noted that The Outer Worlds 2 is now a true multi-format title. It was only announced for PC and Xbox - and reminds us once again that Microsoft needs to take the leaf out of its mouth soon. Are there exclusive games for Xbox - and if not... Say it straight out in that case.

Well, we have lots of reading to offer from the night on the news page. Take the opportunity to catch up, much of this will be recurring big news for two years to come.

Very happy with The Game Awards

Josef Fares' presentation of Split Fiction was one of the highlights for me, but what did you like best?
