Sat down in the darkness of the cinema in Östersund on Tuesday night to check out the hyped Heretic. A film that has been hyped a lot, with a seemingly low budget, where Hugh Grant is visited by two missionary Mormons in recruitment.
It quickly becomes clear that it will be a slow, philosophical and even theological film, and the two girls (extremely nicely played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) barely have time to knock on Grant's door before the atmosphere starts to feel oppressive. This is a film that benefits from you knowing as little as possible, so I thought I would not spoil anything, and instead state that this could very well be the horror film of the year for my own part.
The interaction between Grant and the girls is absolutely phenomenal and the atmosphere is almost palpable, and I like how incredibly exciting and scary it can be without having to rely on any jump scares. In short, don't miss out, this is worth both the cinema ticket and a hefty load of popcorn. You can thank me later.
Is Heretic the horror movie of the year? I actually think so.
