Mods are one of the biggest advantages of PC as a gaming format, and the reason why games can continue to look new for eternity. It is rare to hear any negative tones about this, most likely precisely because there really are none. At least that's from my Western perspective.
Automaton is currently highlighting how Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is being diligently modded right now as people create their own solutions to perceived problems and improve various aspects of it. In Japan, the Dragon Quest series is gigantic and has incredibly loyal fans, and there is a different view here. How widespread this view is, I do not know, but note that there are several examples of Japanese people who think mods are desecrating other artists' works, and Automaton believes that they have only handpicked a few of very many.
One person writes, among other things, that:
"I don't understand why people can modify other people's work without permission. It's like looking at an illustration and saying, "It wasn't up to scratch, so I fixed it," right?"
Another clearly angrily states :
"Some PC users really think they're doing the game a favor by introducing mods. If you have that kind of technology to start with, then make your own games from scratch, don't just play with other people's work! At least I think so."
Yet another post explains how differently Japanese people view this thing with mods, and at the time of writing, it already has 10,000 likes.
So where do I want to go? Not really anywhere. I often modded games myself in the past but have stopped because I think it takes time I'd rather spend playing, and I immediately get the feeling that I should check out what else is available and worry about whether I've made the best choices. Which for me means that I don't enjoy the games as much. However, it's my own fault, and I prefer to go for the vanilla version for that reason, not because I think it's morally wrong.
However, I think that these Japanese thoughts were quite exciting and had not seen them before, and wanted to share them with those of you who read. Because gamers can be that different in different parts of the world.
What do you think about the Japanese perspective on mods?
If you want to play as He-Man in Skyrim, you can be sure that you can do it thanks to mods.
