I love Charlie Brooker's satirical sci-fi anthology and I can't tell you how many hundreds of times I've recommended my favourite episodes of White Christmas, The Entire History of You, San Junipero and Metalhead to people around me in an intensely passionate voice. Those four episodes are brilliance in its purest form. The single best thing Netflix has ever produced and episodes that I return to again and again. Frequently.

As a result, the wait/longing for the sixth season has been big and long. Long and big. I have more or less been counting the days and last night I watched the whole thing. All five hours. And I feel satisfied but not blown away. Black Mirror has always been uneven, which has been part of its appeal. An anthology with different production teams, directors and actors based on completely different ideas and premises must be allowed to diverge. High, low, wide... Like Love, Death and Robots, this is part of what makes Black Mirror so good.

Season six kicks off with the episode Joan is Awful, which is a fantastically funny satire on today's deepfake/AI hysteria and where a seemingly ordinary middle manager has her life completely destroyed by Netflix's new supercomputer that turns her missteps into dramatic Friday entertainment. I laughed really hard at several of the bizarre scenes and the ending felt both cleverly written and cleverly acted. Almost as good was the episode Loch Henry about an aspiring documentary maker and his ambitious girlfriend whose terrorizing shock discovery at home in the countryside drives them to try to find out the truth about the village's long-dead serial killer. Unnerving, human, stylish and, by the end, both bizarre and thrilling at the same time, with skillful acting.

The Josh Hartnett episode Beyond the Sea about AI and consciousness was, in my opinion, the weakest in this season along with the paparazzi story Mazey Day where an unnervingly dark werewolf slaughter never really becomes either exciting or interesting because the acting is slack and the pace is too slow. Demon 79 is set in the 70's and is by far the best looking episode of the season in terms of set design and photography but just like Mazey and Sea, it never really takes off but feels mostly drawn out and in need of sharper and more coherent editing, more drive. Overall, season six is not bad at all, but it's also not quite the super season I had hoped for. Compared to White Christmas, The Entire History of You, San Junipero and Metalhead, there is nothing in this round that can compete with Black Mirror's best. Not even close.
