Apex Legends causes sales surge for Apex Construct

You know how some game titles sound very similar? Turns out it can lead to some very interesting sales numbers for smaller titles.

Bethesda has been known for suing other publishers and developers for making games with too similar titles to theirs. Now we have proof that this kind of confusion can be a really good thing for the less popular games.

VR title Apex Construct was first released back in February 2018 for PSVR and later on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, to fairly little fanfare and didn't exactly turn the world on fire sales-wise. That is, until earlier this month when visits to the game's Steam page increased with more than 4000 percent and sold more copies in China last week than in all of 2018. Why this sudden flux of interest? Andreas Juliusson, the communications manager at Fast Travel Games, has shared his very clear thoughts on Reddit. He says this is without a doubt a case of mistaken identity with Respawn's extremely popular free-to-play battle royale game Apex Legends.

A very interesting and weird thing, especially as there are some very obvious differences between the games. Like Juliusson says, Apex Legends is only available via Origin and is free, while Apex Construct is a VR game on Steam and costs $29.99.

This increase has obviously lead to an incredible boost of income for Fast Travel Games, but they aren't drinking champagne just yet, as they expect to give a bunch of refunds as soon as people realise their mistake. Top that with the fact that the game has also gotten a ton of negative user reviews from buyers who feel they have been scammed because of the similar names. Hopefully, something Steam can sort out as that is the exact sort of ignorant review bombing that should not be made possible. So this is what you might consider a good news, bad news situation, but at least it's safe to say that Apex Construct still will have profited a bit of attention as a result of Respawn's choice of title.

Have you ever experienced anything similar, and do you think people deserve being refunded for what you might consider to be ignorance?
