1666: Amsterdam is still happening "for sure"

Patrice Désilets confirms that Panache might well look back when it's time to plan ahead for the game after Ancestors.

If you've been following the career of Assassin's Creed-creator Patrice Désilets then you'll know about the storied development of 1666: Amsterdam. Long story short, Désilets left Ubisoft and shacked up with the now-defunct version of THQ, but encountered contractual issues with his former employer. After THQ went bust, Ubisoft snapped up the rights to 1666 and brought the developer back into the fold. Désilets eventually left the company (again) and it was eventually settled that he would retain the rights to the fledgeling IP.

Fast forward a couple of years and Désilets' new studio, Panache, is working on a game called Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey (which we previewed just the other day), but the developer hasn't forgotten 1666 and, after talking to VG247, it seems as though the plan is still to make the game. When asked directly about his previous project, he said, "for sure, Amsterdam 1666 is gonna happen."

The developer also explained how the work the studio is doing on Ancestors could feed into the studio's next project. "You put the cape on the ape and you're pretty good to do another game. If you think about it, climbing up a tree trunk, climbing a rock, climbing a building façade... It's like now I've got a toolbox."

Some time has passed between the initial conceptualisation of the project and now, and it's therefore only natural that Desilets won't stick to the original script, such as it was.

"Now I am thinking about it a little bit. It'll probably change a little bit," Desilets told the site. "You were more like the devil's apprentice than the actual devil. Once I finish this and then, 'Okay what's next?' If it's Amsterdam 1666, I'll probably restart from scratch."
