At a recent event we talked to FIFA 14's producer, Nick Channon, and found out about the features coming to next-gen FIFA, and how the new hardware changes the game.
"When we started out on this, there was a couple of things we wanted to make sure we'd done," Channon explained to us. "If you look previously at transitions, the games themselves on the new consoles didn't always match the features of the previous console's. So that was something that we were very conscious of. We wanted to make sure that all of the most popular modes within our game, all the major modes, were there, they were also there to the same extent that the HD version had been. So making sure that this year had Co-op Seasons added, making sure that the new features in Career Mode are added, and the chemistry styles was added to FIFA Ultimate Team. So that was the first consideration, making sure that was there."
FIFA 14‘s next-gen producer then continued: "And then secondly, for us on a new console, how can we do deep innovation in gameplay, and how can we change the presentation within the game? We wanted it to feel different to any FIFA game you'd seen before. So that's kind of the approach we took, it'd been great to be able use the EA Sports Ignite engine, and it's really about using the processing power and memory - just so much more processing power, more memory - on the new consoles, so now we're able to do significantly more processing around the physics system which is obviously core to our game, and we've also been able to add significantly more animations which changes the feel, the look, the fluidity within the game as well."
Before and after speaking with Nick, we were able to get hands-on with the Xbox One version of FIFA 14. You can read our impressions here.
