Western games typically have a difficult time capturing the imagination of Japanese gamers, but the most recent GTA titles have been an exception and it seems Grand Theft Auto V has been doing exceptionally well.

Siliconera reports that the game sold 360,115 copies (PS3) and another 26,612 copies (Xbox 360) in its first week. Meanwhile, VGchartzpegs first week PS3 sales at 341,400 copies. Regardless, it's a new record for the series (GTA IV sold 166,000 in its first week). Sure these numbers pale in comparison with more than 15 million sold in Europe and North America, but it's still very impressive from Rockstar who seem to have cultivated a strong following in Japan.
