Seen the Grand Theft Auto V trailer now? Yes? Good. Ready to pour over screen grabs to see what goodies and potential story reveals are rammed into the trailer? Yes? Good. Here we go.
Our first glance of the in-game engine, and given the wash of colours, the suggestion we're back in Vice City. However, this looks to be present day, given the clothing and vehicles. Note the fluid motion of the runners, who admire each other in passing - Rockstar's Euphoria engine at the top of its game (again)? Golf as the new mini-game? The tone of the trailer thus far has suggested laid-back holiday... ...as exampled by this jet-skiing glimpse. Though the industrial backdrop is a step away from beach-side resorts. A holiday snapshot, and a good chance for Rockstar to show off the power of GTAV's engine. There's still the suggestion of bling, with the first city street snap as a driver lowers his car's roof, and revs the engine. A mass of wind turbines - similar to the setup in Los Angeles. Freeway sign names automatically signal a rush to Google Maps: nothing to be found, but the LA references are getting stronger - looks like we're back in San Andreas. Beach-side, sun-kissed gym - another point towards some ocean-side American city. There's a clever contrast here by Rockstar between classes as the voiceover intones "thought I'd be a Dad..." - the divide is something Rockstar repeats through the trailer, making you unsure of where you'll be standing on the class line. One construction site points out the build of the Mile High Club - one of the very few more obvious jokes by the GTA developer. Crop-dusting mini-game? Bets are a similar scene will come to play in a mission later on the game... Back to basics: just before you thought GTAV was toddling off to retirement, it brings the bang with a gunman masquerading as a Pest Control worker. However, the emphasis on family in the voice-over suggests an interesting twist to the usual criminal underworld tale. And he's not alone - is this the start of a heist? Note that while this might be the game's protagonist, the trailer shows off other individuals, suggesting either an extensive customisation option or multiple viewpoints. The tempo heats up as we cut to a sports car roaring through the streets. Note the company slogan "Once it pings, eat like Kings" - Rockstar could make a mint out selling marketing ideas to fast food chains. Smaller details: note the use of shadows and light, and the cardboard sheets on the sidewalk obviously used by the homeless. A home owner putting up a "for sale" sign - either a nod to the ability to get on the property ladder, or an indicator that Rockstar's tackling real-world recession as well as criminal activity this time round. Certain GTA staples are definitely in place - namely picking up prostitutes. On first glimpse we thought this was GTAIV's Niko Bellic - older and no more wiser, but on consideration, it might be Rockstar hammering home the contrast between the social classes, so heavily emphasised between the trailer's start and end. Our second glimpse of homeless camping out under bridges - is GTAV a real rags to riches story? And in complete contrast, a fast track shot of a fighter jet soaring between skyscrapers. Are we going to pilot that ourselves? Note again, Rockstar showing a interaction between two very different perspectives: the bar bouncer and the drunkard (or victim). But more prominent is the motorcycle, front right - bikes are back. A long range shot of the city starts wrapping up proceedings. The scale looks on par with previous games. But we finish on confirmation of the location with the Vinewood hill sign. We're back in San Andreas. Is that private jet flying in overhead your character returning to the city?
