Trials Frontier mission structure "gives you reason to ride"

We talk to Red Lynx about taking the racer to mobile.

As Trials leaps onto iOS, we talk to creative director Antti Ilvessuo about the changes Red Lynx have made to the series.

"Because the whole game is based on missions, we thought we needed some sort of storyline in a way to make the missions meaningful," he explains about the restructure of the game's front end, "So people come talk to you, ask whether you can do this or this...that's why the game feels more dynamic and have have reason to ride."

Frontier will also make use of multiple bikes for different missions, rather than funnelling you into unlocking the biggest and best bike.

"You upgrade different parts of your bike, but you are also collecting blueprint parts...you do a certain mission and you'll get one part of a blueprint - you then need four more to complete it, and you can start improving that bike. So everything is tied to those missions," Antti says.

We asked about transferring the authentic Trials feel to mobile, but the director doesn't think there'll be much difference.

"We've been learning from all the iPhone titles we've done previously. For example, Moto Heroes had similar controls, so in that game we made sure the controls worked, and they've improved in Trials. It's not just the controls, it's the physics. The physics tuning has been six months [in development]."

As for the size of the game, the creator doesn't see it as a quick fix. "There's sixty levels, but the total mission count is over two hundred... it's not the same unlock mechamism [as by the difficulty levels before], you unlock levels with different missions, the levels open up in one huge map, but the difficulty is marked when you open the level."
