There were rumours flying around earlier in the year that suggested that Arkane Studios had taken over development of the oft-delayed Prey 2, a game originally being worked on by Human Head Studios.

Those rumours were later denied on two separate occasions in interviews with RPS. First Bethesda's Pete Hines went on the record saying: "All of that stuff, I have no idea where it came from." That was followed by a more recent denial, this time coming from Arkane's Raphael Colantonio, who when asked to clarify the situation stated: "No. We've been looking at where that rumor came from, and I really don't know."

After two separate denials, internal emails obtained by Kotaku suggest that development on the sequel is in fact underway at Arkane's Austin studio. While it's no big deal that Arkane and Bethesda want to unveil the game on their own terms, the way that they appear to be spreading misinformation is certainly interesting.

One thing's for sure, after the sterling work done by the studio on Dishonored, a reboot of Prey 2 described (in one of aforementioned internal emails) as "a spiritual successor to System Shock 3" is certainly an enticing prospect. When we'll find out more about the project remains to be seen, but given Arkane and Bethesda's current stance, don't expect anything soon.
