The EU/UK version of The Last of Us was censored, it has been confirmed by a studio community manager. The response to a private question was posted on both the Naughty Dog and Playstation forums.

"The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed in order to accommodate those choices," said the response.

"To be honest, I'm not sure what version Australia is getting. If you import the North/South American version, it will not be censored, but EU/UK will be."

The censorship appears in the multiplayer mode of The Last of Us (single player is the same in all territories). Players can't be dismembered, and there's less blood and gore. The move comes because some PAL territories have much stricter guidelines regarding this kind of content, but some gamers are annoyed that all PAL versions of the game have been affected even though their regions have more liberal guidelines than those that prompted the censorship in the first place.
