The Battlefield 3 blog has confirmed that you will need an account on EA's new Origin service in order to play the PC version of Battlefield 3. For now it is unclear whether you will be forced to use Origin even if you buy it digitally through another outlet, but it seems likely to be true for all copies of Battlefield 3.
It's starting to become clear just why EA and Valve are butting heads over the terms of service for Steam. EA obviously want Origin to fill a similar purpose and thus they collide.
