Ubisoft has revealed The Division at their press conference. It is the long rumoured Tom Clancy MMO from Massive. It's to be PS4/Xbox One exclusive (with no PC version), with a contemporary setting, but based on a scenario where society has broken down because of a pandemic.

Gangs are controlling New York, and you're a sleeper agent activated to help bring society back to normal on both micro (dealing with looters) and macro (chasing whoever is behind the pandemic) levels. Instead of the typical Clancy scenario where "the best of the best" comes in to save the day, this is a game where the best of the best failed to set things right and all hell breaks loose.

The Division

It's going to be a classless game where you pick skills to define your class, but you can re-spec at any time as the situation dictates. You can play it pretty straight forward or play more stealthily, adapt a tank role or a healer role, or combine various skills. But you're not locked in and devs felt it didn't fit the fiction (sleeper cells with similar background) to have different fixed classes.

New York is knee deep in the crisis - it's not post-apocalyptic, but rather mid-crisis. Society is breaking down, people don't have food or water, and the homeless people are actually the ones best adapted to the new situation. Anyone with a gun has power. Dogs are running around. Crows are feeding on garbage in the streets. It's a dirty and worn New York, but also hauntingly empty in places.

The Division

There will be PvP and it's tied into a twist in the story that sees two factions fight for some of the same resources in "quarantined zones". The game makes use of a new engine "Snowdrop" developed in-house at Massive. When the concept of the next generation consoles was first revealed to them, Massive (with their PC background) felt the hardware was a great fit with their technology and know how, and that's why the game is a console exclusive. The limitations of the controller is also part of the game design where you're forced to select a limited amount of skills (that you can map to the buttons).

"It was created as a Clancy game from the start," says Ubisoft Massive's David Polfeldt. "We wanted to add something new to the Clancy family."

The game will see release next year and only on PS4 and Xbox One.

"We're still early in 2016, but we've already made room for The Division in our game of the year list."
