THQ has announce a sequel to Darksiders, the action-adventure featuring characters designed by ex-comic book artist Joe Madureira, which was released in 2010 and trumped Sega's Bayonetta in the UK sales charts.

The game's scheduled for release next year for console and PC, the story of which will run parallel to the events in the first game, and follows the character Death, artwork (below) for whom cropped up in the original Darksiders concept sketches.

Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President of Core Games commented: "We have taken the best parts of Darksiders and improved on them with a host of new mechanics and features. You will see great things from this epic game."

The game promises to have a larger world, full weapon and armour upgrade systems as well as more challenging dungeons and bosses. Expect the game to debut in some form at E3 next week.

A sequel to the original has always been discussed, even when the first game was still in development. Talking to Joe Madureira at San Diego Comic-Con a few years ago, the creator discussed future titles in the series following the other Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the intention of each story to shed further light and different perspectives on a much wider story arc.

REVIEW. Written by Martin Eiser

"This is a fully playable comic book that's top notch from the beginning to - well, let's say, nearly the end."
