One of the worst kept secrets ever is without a doubt Namco Bandai's Soul Calibur V. After months of tweets from the game director it was finally made official today at Namco Bandai's luxurious Level Up event in Dubai.

The game is set to launch on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012 and a short trailer was shown to the gathered games media in Dubai this morning.

The story for those of you who care about such things in a fighting game is set 17 years after the ending of Soul Calibur IV and as you may have been aware Siegfried will no longer star as the main character of the story. Instead Sophitia Alexandra's son Patroklos takes over and we will follow him as he defends the destiny of his family. Patroklos plays like his mother in some ways, but is described as a quicker character.

As you may expect this generational leap in the series opens up for a bunch of new characters to emerge, but there will also be old ones who will make an appearance and Project Soul also hints at possible guest appearances, something the series has been known for in the past.

As far as the gameplay goes we have been promised a faster system than before and the character creation that has been included in the past two games will be back along with more beautiful visuals than ever before.

Namco Bandai will release more details on Soul Calibur V at E3 in Los Angeles next month, and hopefully we will get to see more of the game at that point in time.

REVIEW. Written by Mike Holmes

"Their relationship is a microcosm of the games overall theme; the battle between good and evil, between Soul Calibur and Soul Edge."
