Capcom has confirmed the existence of a new Resident Evil title.

As believed, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will be developed by Slant 6 Games and is set between Resident Evil 2 and 3 in the infamous city which was wiped out by a zombie outbreak. And it seems that familiar faces will be reappearing if the game's blurb is anything to go by, but more interestingly, allow you to alter the course of the franchise's timeline and "rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak."

The game's a third-person team-based shooter with one to four player co-op, obviously leaning heavily on the developer's experience with Sony's SOCOM series, as you combat zombies, bio-organic weapons and even another opposing squad - a US Government-sanctioned force versus your Umbrella-approved team.

From the nudges and winks we're hearing here, this newest Resident Evil seems a potent mix of various game types. There's the military edge, obviously, which could swing it closer to the ever popular trend of modern warfare shooters that are topping sales charts, but we've a feeling this will linger closer to Left 4 Dead territory rather than Operation: Flashpoint.

It's not the first time Capcom has branched its popular series off the beaten track before either - the Survivor side-series was a on-rails gun game, and Capcom has already touched upon the time period this new title is set in with the multiplayer Resident Evil: Outbreak on PS2.

Looks like we're going back in time with the new RE - will we stumble on both Leon and Claire?
