Namco Bandai has announced a new Ridge Racer title for console.

Ridge Racer: Unbounded could also be subtitled "Ridge's Dirty Little Secret", as the short teaser trailer suggests the power-sliding fraternity swop graceful racing lines for car-smashing shunts when the sun goes down.

That's right; it looks like Ridge Racer's new iteration, which is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 in the near future, is adapting the vehicular-crunching tactics of Criterion's best and a bevy of other crash-tastic racers.

The non-gameplay video shows a female racer (who might be the series star Reiko Nagase) driving into a darkened alley in a regular R.R style ride and swopping over to a street-style muscle car. She then proceeds to drive it across an intersection to another alleyway, smashing up traffic as she goes.

The game's reportedly being developed by Flatout's Bugbear Entertainment, suggesting the series might be going the way of EA's Need for Speed, with different developers attempting different iterations of the legendary franchise. While we're uneasy in seeing Ridge Racer make a slide into an alternate genre, it might revitalise the series, which has tapered off in industry importance and quality in recent years.

And at least it won't be associated with this anymore.

REVIEW. Written by Rasmus Lund-Hansen

"High speed, generous drift, smooth visuals and possible a little gimmick or two to spice things up - Unbounded ticks them all."

Ridge Racer Unbounded

PREVIEW. Written by Gillen McAllister

"There's liberal exuberance in its two-ton metallic flings; exciting in its voraciousness, but suitably bizarre in the extremities in which drifts play out."
