There has been a lot of talk, and confusion, about how many subscriber numbers Bioware's ambitious MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will need to be profitable - after all, it's a huge project for both the developer and EA. Analysts have mentioned numbers between one and two million, while EA CFO Scott Brown previously has said that the game will not need that many to start making money.

Quoted by The Escapist (via Gamasutra), Scott Brown has now said in a conference call that the game would only need half of that. "At half a million subscribers, the game is substantially profitable, but it's not the kind of thing we would write home about. Anything north of a million subscribers, it's a very profitable business."

Given that box-sales will count towards The Old Republic's break-even point, and the huge marketing campaign that EA is bound will start up before the game launches at some point after April this year (that doesn't mean it will launch this year, mind) will probably have a lot of people picking it up, there is probably a lot of truth to this latest statement. It's hard to say at this point, though - the budget for the game has been rumored to reach somewhere between $100-300 million.
