The upcoming Morrowind expansion will see the largest zone added to Elder Scrolls Online since the game's launch, alongside a meaty 30 hours' worth of new content. At PAX East, we were able to catch up with creative director, Rich Lambert, to discuss what we'll see in the return to Vvardenfell.

One of the biggest additions to the game is the new Battlegrounds PvP - a 4v4v4 team-based mode including deathmatch, domination and capture the flag. "You have a half hour at lunch, you can play two games and feel like you accomplished something. We want it to be super accessible, easy to get in, pick up and play," Lambert explained.

Battlegrounds isn't intended as just a fun distraction, but a worthwhile break from longer play sessions as every match rewards you with Alliance points, experience, gold, and items. New sets have been added which can only be obtained by playing the PvP, in addition to new vendors to purchase exclusive furnishings.

Lambert also detailed some of the side stories which are longer this time around: "We have a Telvanni storyline that focuses more on slavery and how slaves are utilised in Telvanni culture. Then we have another really cool Morag Tong-themed series of quests where you get to work with Naryu Virian, who was one of our really popular characters in the base game. So you get to go back, play with her and learn more about the Morag Tong and how they work."

"One of the first things we do when thinking about designing a new class is look at the player fantasy - what it is we don't have in our game. That's where we started with the Warden." The new magic class added in the expansion allows you to fight with the War Bear companion and harness nature-based skill lines.

Morrowind shows promise for things to come in the future of Elder Scrolls Online, as Lambert suggests there will be a mix of new content to look forward to moving forward:

"We still want to do the quarterly updates - we're still committed to that. We want to make sure we're rewarding our ESO Plus subscribers as well, so we're always looking for new features to add to that. But these new chapters allow us to go bigger."

The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind expansion releases on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One on June 6th.
