Blizzard have announced that World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, the fourth expansion of the popular MMORPG, sold 2.7 million copies since its release (not taking the October 2 Chinese release into consideration), while worldwide subscription numbers have return to more than 10 million players as a result.

"With Mists of Pandaria, we set out to expand on the sense of fun and discovery that's always been at the heart of World of Warcraft -- in addition to adding a huge variety of new content and features to the game," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "It's been gratifying to see the results of all of the work we put into this expansion and to hear all of the positive feedback from players so far."

While these numbers are impressive it should be noted that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the third expansion, sold an even more spectacular 3.3 million copies in its first 24 hours (and 4.7 million in its first month). It's a significant decline, but perhaps not as pronounced as some analysts expected.
