Riot Games has announced that player numbers in League of Legends have surpassed 100 million, seven years after the initial release of the game.

Riot Games claim to dislike talking about numbers, hence they haven't released any since 2014 when the player base was revealed to be 67 million players strong.

"It's hard to parse, but at the end of the day, those things don't even feel real," said Riot Games' Brandon Beck. "The coolest thing is actually when we're at the live events and get to meet fans face to face. Only then does it start to feel real. Otherwise, they're just numbers on a screen all over the world."

If accurate these staggering new numbers mean that around 1.35% of the world's population plays League of Legends, or to put that in a different perspective, one in 74 people play the game.

Marc Merrill, also of Riot Games, said that the players are the real driving force behind the success of the game.

"We aspire to deliver on the obligation we feel to players," says Merrill. "When we let them down, it feels really [bad]. That's one of the things that really drives and motivates all Rioters."
