At Gamescom 2016 we spoke to Forza Horizon 3's creative director Ralph Fulton about the game's car selection and how it is influenced by Australian car culture.

Talking about the selection process for cars, Fulton said "we have more cars in this game then we've ever had before. There's more than 350 on disk and you're right we've still got a way to go in announcing them. Horizon 2 shipped with just over 200, which is still a big car list, so you can see the leap we've made, and a lot of people think that's easier, you'll just have all the cars. It's not quite that simple. We have a lot of different lenses that we look at all our cars, all available cars to decide what goes in. Now there's obvious ones like we want the latest, hottest cars like the Lamborghini Centenario is on our cover and it's on our cover because it's the pinnacle of supercar engineering this year".

"The other lenses are very unique to Horizon because I think in Horizon we have more leway to do different things, so offroad is a big thing in Horizon 3. Some of our environment demands incredibly rugged, extreme offroaders so we've introduced an entirely new class in this game which is the buggy, the extreme buggy class never before seen in Forza. Huge suspension, I mean crazy suspension, and again that's challenging our physics system, making sure it's honest in terms of the way we're simulating all of that".

Selecting these cars, specifically those for the series' barn finds, is no easy task either. "There's a great deal of thought and planning that goes into picking those cars but then also finding them in the world because often these cars that we hide in barns are there because they're incredibly rare, so there's a challenge there in just locating one that we can go and reference and photograph so we can build it".

"I think we always want to have some unusual and oddball cars that no other racing game would ever have, right? I think that's kind of important to me. Last time we had the VW Camper Van and we had the Ford Capri, really cool cars that mean a lot to some people but don't necessarily find their way into a lot of racing games".

In regards to the Australian culture around cars Fulton said: "I don't think the Australians would have ever forgiven us if we hadn't taken this opportunity to really dig Australian domestic car culture." He continued "we have a ton of new Australian cars in the game which are keeping even our most ardent Australian fans happy I hope. We've got some really great cars we've announced, the 74 Sandman which you might remember from the first Mad Max movie."

Fulton was also keen to mention that "we have the last ever utes that are being made this year, so this is the last ever year that utes will be manufactured domestically in Australia".

Forza Horizon 3 is out on September 27 for Xbox One and PC.
